Red, colorful chintz

The publication is devoted to red fabrics with contrasting patterns, known today in Russia as puntsovye or baranovskie chintzes. In the second half of the 19th century, these fabrics were rightfully called folk fabrics: they could be found in the city and the countryside, at the fair and the Oriental bazaar, in Russian pavilions at World Exhibitions and among the merchandise of bailers. Despite the widespread popularity of crimson chintzes and shawls, the history of their appearance and use in Russia is practically unstudied. Natalia Kovaleva, Head of the Folk Art Department of the Russian Museum, for the first time tells in detail about the origins of artistic ornamentation, the development of manufacturing technology, the largest foreign and Russian productions, as well as about the dominance of red color in Russian folk art and the role of red chintzes in traditional costume. The book-album will be of interest both to professional historians, art historians, museum staff, collectors, and a wide range of Russian art lovers.
