Sixtus IV and the papal court artist Melozzo da Forlì. Renaissance in Italy

Stories about the relationship between artist and client are among the most fascinating, especially when the events unfold during the Renaissance, in Italy, at the papal court. They involve twists and turns of fate, political games, monks, theologians, courtiers, and, most importantly, art—its development, its life.

Art historian Ulyana Dobrova's book explores how the Roman school of art developed under Pope Sixtus IV, how he developed cultural policy, using it to strengthen his power, and the role played in all of this by the once-wandering free artist Melozzo da Forlì. Arriving in Rome, the master faced a challenge that was both political and artistic. The result of this symbiosis were beautiful works of art, such as the fresco of the Ascension in the church of Santi Apostoli, the fresco of the Institution of the Vatican Apostolic Library and the decoration of the Sacristy of San Marco in the Cathedral of Santa Casa di Loreto - the Holy House of Our Lady of Loreto.
