William Faulkner was the greatest American writer of the 20th century, awarded the Nobel Prize for his unique contribution to the modern American novel. This collection presents Faulkner's early works, providing a key to his creative work.

"Soldier's Pay" was Faulkner's first major novel. It centers on a young pilot who returns home from Europe to the American hinterland after the end of World War I.

"Sartoris," published three years later, echoes "Soldier's Pay" in its theme of postwar America. It first introduces many characters who would appear in Faulkner's later works. Most of these are set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County in the southern US state of Mississippi, where Faulkner spent most of his life.

"The Sound and the Fury" brought Faulkner worldwide fame and became a classic of modernist literature. This is one of the pinnacles of the writer's work, as well as Faulkner's favorite brainchild, in which, as the author writes, "there is perhaps something unique that can seriously touch my soul as a writer."
