Storming of the Brest Fortress

On June 22, 1941, the Red Army won its first victory in the Great Patriotic War - the assault on the Brest Fortress, which the German command had only hours to capture, ended in complete failure and heavy losses of the Wehrmacht's 45th Division. Despite the suddenness of the attack and the loss of control of the troops at the very beginning of the battle, the Red Army demonstrated miracles of spontaneous self-organization, providing the enemy with desperate resistance. It took the Germans more than a week to break it, but some groups of defenders held on until the end of July, and the last fighters continued to fight until the fall of 1941. Thus was born the legend of the "immortal garrison" ...
Soviet documents on the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress for obvious reasons have not survived, but in recent years, domestic researchers have become available to German military archives, in which the history of the assault is reflected in great detail and on the basis of which this book is written. This is a view of the battle for the Brest Fortress from the German side: from the command post of the 45th Division, from the battle order of the advancing infantry, through the sights of MG-34 machine guns and heavy siege guns. This is the true story of the assault, which was the first shock for the German soldiers and the immortal feat of the Red Army and border guards.
