The theme of espionage occupies a special place in the creative legacy of the prominent Soviet writer Alexander Isaevich Voinov (1912–1979). His novella "The Forged Chest" (1955) gained widespread acclaim. The plot centers on the search for enemy agents during the Great Patriotic War. Retreating German troops attempt to slow the advance of the Red Army with the help of a deeply undercover network of saboteurs. This is one of the finest examples of Soviet adventure literature: frontline documentary style is successfully combined with a tense plot. The precision of detail, the struggle between logic and intuition and a carefully constructed "legend" make it impossible to tear yourself away from the book. The writer's later novellas, "The Outpost of the Far Island" (1968) and "Curfew" (1975), show how the character of the Soviet people is shaped, their indomitable readiness for heroic deeds. The first tells the story of teenagers living in a border area. Even in peacetime, they must make quick decisions that affect the lives of others. The second tells the story of Soviet intelligence's struggle to save the port of Odessa in the spring of 1944.
