Isaac Bashevis Singer is one of the rare writers, most of whose works exist in two versions at once: in the original and in a translation, which sometimes differs markedly from the original text. In 1974, Singer's novel Expeditions of the Soul was published in Yiddish. Four years later, an English version of the novel with the simple and memorable title "Shosha" was published. It is the one that is familiar to readers all over the world. Before you is a translation made for the first time from the original Yiddish edition. Hinting at Freudian "expeditions into the unconscious", the author describes in the novel the Jewish bohemia of pre-war Warsaw, which entertains itself with psychoanalytical sessions with a touch of Hasidism, tries to see the coming catastrophe, is fond of the occult and Kabbalah, tries to realize the meaning of faith and service to the deity in the era of evil. The love of the protagonist Arn Greidinger for Shosha, the "hidden righteous woman", remains inexplicable and paradoxical, like the longing for the stove-smelling Krochmalnaya Street....
