Shocking architecture

When we talk about architecture, we immediately visualize the subject clearly, because architecture surrounds us everywhere and accompanies us throughout our lives. But when we talk about architects - the former clarity disappears, the subject of conversation begins to hide in the fog, although the names of the authors of the most famous buildings many people know well - Palladio or Corbusier, Bazhenov or Rastrelli, we have all heard of these brilliant architects. However, to imagine exactly how they worked, where they drew inspiration from, how ideas and images were born, which will later be embodied in stone, glass, wood or concrete, not everyone can. This is a curious paradox - architecture is open and familiar to everyone, while its creation is a mysterious process, not understood by many, almost mystical. Accordingly, architects are also presented to us as closed, unapproachable people who, like priests, possess secret knowledge and skills.
And of course, almost every architectural masterpiece hides curious facts, mysterious events or surprising, sometimes dramatic, relationships between authors and customers. And when we do show curiosity, we ask ourselves with amazement, is it true that the Eiffel Tower is only a gate to the exhibition? And is it true that a palace was named after an ordinary frog and a service was created? And is it true that a German cathedral took 600 years to build, and that there is a house in Austria that has entire gardens growing on its balconies and roof? Or that in a Russian and English park there are two absolutely identical bridges, and that skyscrapers appeared thanks to palm trees?

25 entertaining, sometimes shocking stories, including:
- How Florence got its dome thanks to doors;
- how a palace frog became famous to three powers;
- the vanity of a minister and the envy of a king;
- how Moscow ended up on the shores of the Black Sea;
- how only the entrance remained of the exhibition;
- why skyscrapers are grateful to palm trees;
- secret marriage, the smart house and the pyramids;
- a resort for hobbits;
- how architects spent a hundred years inventing the chair.
