Sasha Sokolov is a living classic, an avant-garde writer, and a tireless experimenter, one of the few contemporary authors to receive Nabokov's high praise. Sokolov sought to escape the "everyday," "worn-out" language and thus invented his own unique style, where prose flows into poetry and vice versa, and every word is impeccably crafted.

"School for Fools" is Sasha Sokolov's first novel, published in 1976 by Ardis. The entire text is an internal monologue, a stream of consciousness, of a student at a special school. Perhaps his experiences are connected to Veta Akatova, with whom the narrator is in love, or perhaps to the incredible nature he observes around him while living in a dacha village. But this is inaccurate, for the world of this novel is fluid and unsteady, its reality devoid of clear boundaries. According to the author himself, this book is “about a sophisticated and strange boy suffering from a split personality… who cannot come to terms with the reality around him” and, as he enters the adult world, discovers the presence of love and death in it.
