India, 1930s. Young Sona works as a nurse in a hospital, hoping that through this honest and difficult work she and her mother will one day be able to lift themselves out of poverty. Dutiful and responsible, Sona has every chance of building a successful career, but her position becomes precarious when she makes the mistake of befriending a new patient, the renowned artist Mira Novak.
Meeting Mira makes Sona realize how timid she has been living, afraid to take risks, try new things, and stand out in any way. The illegitimate daughter of an Indian mother and an Englishman, she feels no sense of belonging to either nation.
But when a series of tragic events unfolds in her life, Sona realizes she must take risks, cast aside conventions, see the world, and perhaps find the father who abandoned her and her mother, whom she simultaneously loves and hates.
Prague, Paris, Milan, London—before Sona, and then before the reader, the European bohemia of that turbulent historical period, when the premonition of World War II was already in the air, will be revealed in all its glory and vice.
And where will this vibrant, emotional journey lead?
