"Shirley" is a fervent description of the conflict of generations, genders, and social classes, in which love stories are closely intertwined with harsh reality. The fabulist Robert Moore is about to marry the wealthy heiress Shirley, although his heart belongs to the homeless Caroline, and Shirley herself is in love with Robert's brother, a penniless teacher. Will there be a happy ending?
Charlotte Brontë wrote "Shirley" in difficult days for her: at this time died of tuberculosis her brother Brenwell and two sisters - Emily and Anne. The novel was published in 1849 under the pseudonym Carrer Bell. The book's booming success forced the author to reveal her true identity and brought her to the attention of London's literary circles. Charlotte turned in her novel to the turn of the century, to the Luddite rebellions - participants of spontaneous protests against the introduction of machines during the industrial revolution in England.
