Diana Mayo is young, beautiful, wealthy, and independent. Her life is cloudless, like a dream come true, where days pass in an endless parade of social pleasures, and England's most eligible bachelors humbly await the favor of this cold beauty. However, Diana is unlike other young ladies: she loves only sports and travel, and adventure draws her more than family life. Having shocked society, Diana hires a local guide and sets off into the desert. Freedom beckons, but the endless sands bring her not freedom, but captivity: on her second day, Diana is kidnapped by Sheikh Ahmed bin Hassan, and circumstances force her, who has never before submitted to anyone, into submission. What fate awaits a captive far from her homeland, under the power of an unbending alien will?

The novel "The Sheik" by English writer Edith Maud Hull, first published in 1919, was a colossal success, remaining one of the most widely read books of the 1920s. A film adaptation was released in 1921, starring silent film superstar Rudolph Valentino as Sheikh Ahmed.
