Shanghai, a paradise built above hell!

The heroes of Mu Shi-ying's stories are unable to resist the night lights of the big city. Overcome by love fever, they lose their heads in the pursuit of pleasure, deceive each other and themselves, fall into debt, laugh, cry, and dance to the point of exhaustion. Neon signs stretch colorful fingers, nightclub doors swing open, women's eyes laugh in glasses... These are the stories of Shanghai in the 1930s—a short and brilliant era, a city of young, desperate, and hopelessly lost people.

Mu Shi-ying (1912–1940) was a Chinese writer, a representative of Shanghai modernism of the 1930s and the "new sensuality" school. His experimental urban novellas are imbued with a painful irony and a vague sense of the end of an era. A nightclub regular and accomplished dancer, Mu Shi-ying became a true chronicler of Shanghai's "golden decade" and shared its fate, dying at the hands of assassins.

Selected works by this undeservedly forgotten writer are published in Russian for the first time, translated by Vitaly Andreev.
