Novelist, poet, linguist, translator, journalist, publisher, and one of the pioneers of the modern Arabic novel, Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq (c. 1804-1887) belongs to a generation of literary enlighteners who wrote in Arabic in the mid-19th century. The book intertwines the traditions of Eastern and European literature. Al-Shidyaq pays tribute to the traditional genres of the riykhla (travel narrative) and maqam (roguish short story) of classical Arabic literature, as well as to the satire of Rabelais, Sterne, Swift, and the Romantic pictorialism of Lamartine and Chateaubriand. The author proclaims two main goals of his book: to acquaint the reader with the curiosities (gara'ib) and rare turns (nawadir) of the Arabic language; to glorify women, to show all their advantages and disadvantages. The interpretation of the title of al-Shidyaq's book "As-Saq 'ala as-saq fi ma huwa al-Faryaq" as "Step by step following al-Faryaq" belongs to A. E. Krymsky. For the first time published a Russian translation of the novel, which was specially made for the series "Literary Monuments" by V. N. Kirpichenko.
For a wide range of readers.
