The novel "Heart" by the great Japanese writer Natsume Soseki (1867–1916) is undoubtedly his magnum opus. It was written just two years after the end of the Meiji era (1868–1912), an era of Japan's modernization and its integration with European culture. But beyond the new knowledge and technologies that became available after the country's opening, Japan experienced profound social upheaval, caused not only by rebellions and wars, but also by the collapse of the feudal value system and its replacement with little-understood new principles of social organization. Natsume Soseki, a contemporary of the era, sought to capture for his readers not only the rapidly changing world around them but also the dilemmas and soul-searching of their time.

In Japan, even more than a century later, "Heart" is considered one of the greatest novels in the history of modern Japanese literature, known to every schoolchild and required reading for anyone seriously interested in Japanese literature, and the translation by academician N. I. Konrad is a classic example of literary translation.
