Jack London's adventure novel tells the story of two distant descendants of the pirate Henry Morgan, who set out together in search of his treasure. They face danger, betrayal, mysterious discoveries, and a struggle not only for gold but also for the heart of a beautiful woman.

Jack London wrote "Hearts of Three" in collaboration with screenwriter Charles Goddard. The work was conceived as the basis for a film series—the writer admitted that he took on this project due to a lack of fresh plots for cinema.

It was his fiftieth book, a milestone anniversary, and an attempt to create an adventure story structured according to the conventions of cinema: with rapid-fire action, chases, treasure, love affairs, and exotic settings. However, the planned filming never took place—Hollywood showed no interest, and the novel was published after London's death, in 1919–1920.

The film adaptation was not released until 75 years later. In 1992, the Dovzhenko Film Studio shot a film of the same name, and it became the last film produced in the USSR.
