The adventure novel “Hearts of Three” became the fiftieth anniversary work of the famous American writer Jack London. He wrote it for a film adaptation, so a characteristic feature of the plot of this work is its emphasized dynamism. The text of the novel is published in translation by Tatyana Alekseevna Kudryavtseva. At the end of the book there is a short essay about the artist Nikolai Anatolyevich Travin, whose illustrations adorn this publication.
Commenting on his fiftieth anniversary novel “Hearts of Three,” Jack London noted that in none of his other adventure works the reader will find such rapidly developing action. This feature was explained simply - for the first time in his life, a world-famous writer tried to compose a script for cinema, and most often on the screen people do not talk about their experiences, but act. Undertaking to describe the adventures of two heroes who went to look for the treasures of their distant ancestor - the famous pirate Morgan, London began collaborating with the experienced American playwright Charles Goddard. The result is a novel in which events literally seethe. “I do not at all intend to hide the fact that I am proud of this work ... I advised the reader ... to plunge headlong into the story, let him then try to tell me that my book is easy to tear myself away from,” London wrote about his novel. "Hearts of Three" is truly captivating. Shootouts, chases, stone statues in the jungle, mysterious caves, a cauldron of molten gold, a treasure chest - these and dozens of similar pictures are just begging to be shown on the screen. “Until now, of course, I have not created anything like this and I am almost convinced that I will not create it in the future... I will be very surprised if this book does not receive the widest distribution,” the writer once remarked and he was right. "Hearts of Three" was his last novel, and this work really became widely known. “Hearts of Three” was filmed several times, but only after the death of the writer. Based on the novel, a five-part film was shot in the USSR. However, all film versions of “Hearts of Three” do not convey the fascination and incredible charm of the literary original, because Jack London was and remains a wonderful master of words. The book is decorated with drawings by Leningrad artist Nikolai Anatolyevich Travin. Illustrating science fiction adventure stories was his favorite activity. Among the authors whose stories and novels he designed were Alexander Belyaev, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle and Jack London. Readers of the first half of the twentieth century were well aware of the special “Travino style.” Nikolai Anatolyevich graduated from art school in Barnaul. In the early 6s, he moved to Petrograd and began collaborating with the magazines “Around the World”, “Chizh” and “Ezh”, he worked with the publishing houses “Detgiz” and “Young Guard”. From the mid-20s, the artist lived in Pushkin. Soon after the start of the Great Patriotic War, Nikolai Anatolyevich moved to Leningrad, where he continued to work until the first winter of the siege, which he did not survive.
