This story is the first in the "Family Happiness: Favorite Street" dilogy by the renowned writer, journalist, and teacher Frida Vigdorova (1915-1965).

This book is not only about the life of a Moscow family, about family relationships, love, motherhood, and domestic life—both before and during the war. Family life is connected to everything that happens around it. The story's protagonist, Sasha, works as a nurse in a children's hospital—first in Moscow, then in Tashkent. One of the main characters is a pilot fighting in Spain, the other a photojournalist who will experience the front and captivity. The difficult life of evacuation, fear for loved ones, relationships with family, friends, colleagues, and, most importantly, children. As in all of Vigdorova's works, "Family Happiness" features the voices of children: Sasha's brother, a teenage schoolboy, her daughter—still a child in the first story of the dilogy—and the children she befriends. This is a book about life—real, intense, complex, sometimes painful, and yet simultaneously happy.
