John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a famous English art historian and theorist, an original and sometimes paradoxical thinker, whose reasoning sometimes fascinates with the precision of his insights. Art history as he interpreted it is the least reminiscent of an academic course, but he was the first professor of fine arts at Oxford University, making "the deaf ... hear and the blind see" with his "speeches filled with fiery passion and marvelous music," if we are to believe the testimony of his student Oscar Wilde. This collection includes the seminal treatise "The Seven Lights of Architecture" (1849), the monumental treatise "The Stones of Venice" (1851-1853, the basis of the translation into Russian was the author's abridged version), "Lectures on Art" (1870), as well as a kind of guide to the blossoming capital of the Renaissance "Walks in Florence" (1875).
