Rozhdestvensky Petrograd. Over a sumptuous dinner at a fashionable restaurant, detectives Lykov and Azvestopulo notice two suspicious individuals seated nearby. One is young, seemingly successful, and has a distinctly criminal demeanor. The other is clean-shaven, his cheeks shiny—no doubt a German. The detectives, although a bit drunk, decide to follow the suspicious individuals.
However, the criminal and the German quickly disappear into the damp St. Petersburg night. Their trail leads the detectives to the Mitava Hotel, where a bellhop has repeatedly seen the couple in a private room. Excellent! Now forensic experts are identifying the criminal by his fingerprints and obtaining his name from the Police Department's registration office.
The results of the examination were simply astonishing... Only the fingerprints of the German, Wedele, were found in the hotel room. There were no other prints. More precisely, there were fingerprints, but without fingerprints. So how can you identify fingerprints that don't exist?
This novel is part of a series about detective Alexei Lykov and is the 38th.
