A Happy Man: The Story of a Country Doctor
14.99 €
First published in 1967, this fictional study of the life of a doctor in rural Gloucestershire is a masterpiece of non-fiction. It is a collaborative work that combines the text of Booker Prize-winning author John Berger (1926–2017) with the photographs of Swiss documentary filmmaker Jean Mohr (1925–2018) in a series of superb analytical, sociological and philosophical reflections on the role of the doctor, the roots of cultural and intellectual deprivation and the motivations that underlie the work of the ‘country doctor’. Revolutionary in its time and still relevant half a century later, the essay stands as a monument to a largely forgotten medical practice, free from the commercialisation of disease and the depersonalisation of the patient, where the doctor who seeks to look into the soul of the patient in order to understand and alleviate their suffering can be called a ‘happy man’.
