Natsume Soseki was one of the most educated representatives of the Europeanized Japanese intelligentsia of the early twentieth century, and at the same time a typical Japanese. This duality allowed him to create his own unique literary style, still attractive to modern readers.

Sanshiro Ogawa, a 23-year-old native of a village on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, enrolls at the University of Tokyo and meets students and teachers who make up his new surroundings. Psychologically, Sanshiro is immersed in three worlds: his native land, where he was previously closely associated with his mother; a university community in which intellectuals squander themselves in pursuit of academic success; and a realm of feelings and emotions, led by his girlfriend, Mineko.
