Samurai were a military class in medieval Japan that ceased to exist in the late 19th century, but the samurai spirit continued to be cultivated in the armed forces of Imperial Japan. It was vividly manifested in all the wars Japan fought in the first half of the 20th century, including the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 and the Soviet-Japanese War of 1945. Only the defeat of the Kwantung Army by the Soviets, which marked Japan's final defeat in World War II, leads to its gradual fading.
All these events are described in detail in the book by military historian A. V. Shishov.
