During the Vietnam War of 1965-1973, almost all types of American planes - from jet-powered Phantoms to anti-guerrilla Broncos - hunted for Vietcong trucks along the Ho Chi Minh Trail supply routes, but 70% of the vehicles destroyed were destroyed by "gunship" planes. Gunships are mounted across the fuselage along one side of the fuselage (this arrangement of guns, indeed, evokes an association with ancient sailing ships - gun ships). The nature of operations of the U.S. Air Force special forces differed sharply from the tactics of the army aviation and it turned out that for combat operations of this kind are best suited for aircraft with low flight speed, equipped, however, very sophisticated onboard equipment. The first "ganship" (AC-47) was converted from a C-47 transport aircraft. In 1967, testing began on the even more powerful AC-130, based on the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The armament consisted of four specially designed modules with six-barrel Minigun machine guns and four 20-mm Vulcan cannons. The "Ganship" was equipped with a night vision system, on-board computer, radar (the same as on F-104 fighters) and powerful searchlights. Several AC-130s were even armed with 105mm Army howitzers to fight tanks. NEW book by a leading aviation historian, based on recently declassified materials "special forces" of the U.S. Air Force, for the first time gives a detailed description of the history of the creation and combat use of aircraft "ganship" in Vietnam, including taking into account the assessment of their actions, conducted by analysts of the CIA. The publication is illustrated with unique photographs of the "Ganships".
