The collection Sahar Novels is the most famous book by the Taiwanese writer San-mao (1943-1991).
Driven by a childhood dream and a thirst for adventure, in the early 1970s she traveled to the Spanish Sahara with her lover Jose. During their stay there, which was only a year and a half, the couple got married, traveled across the desert, turned a Sahrawi shack into a local landmark, made friends among the locals, experienced all the hardships of life in the desert and studied Sahrawi traditions.
And after a while there appeared an autobiographical collection "Saharan Novels", in which San-mao tells about things both ordinary and extraordinary, and where the truth of life neighbors with fiction. In these stories we will find good-natured humor, and ruthless satire, and sad irony, and endless sympathy for the locals who are cut off from civilization.
