1930s. The peaceful life of a Moscow family is shattered by a sentence of "traitor to the Motherland." Five-year-old Elya and her mother are exiled to Kyrgyzstan, where they return to normal life with only a knapsack of belongings. They return repeatedly, as circumstances repeatedly thrust them into an unknown and far from easy "tomorrow." Day after day, year after year. And this is not fiction, heavily embellished by the author, but the memoirs of the main character, Stella Nudolskaya, and her mother. You read and are amazed by the strength of the human spirit, and after reading, you see the world and people a little differently. More multifaceted and better.

"Sugar Child" is neither a memoir nor a work of fiction: despite being told from the perspective of little Eli, the author doesn't offer a "childish perspective" on the history of the 1930s and 1940s, nor does she play with readers through contrived "childhood transformations." On the contrary, the adult within the girl's story is clearly visible. Perhaps this is why the story, originally intended for readers aged 12–16, eventually ceased to be perceived as a "teen story," becoming part of the mainstream of Russian literature.

This edition of "Sugar Child" acknowledges this fact. The second part of the book explores how memoirs evolve into a story and what lies behind the text. Supplemented with photographs, a preface, and extensive commentary, this edition places Eli's story within a historical and literary context. It also places it within a pedagogical context: the renowned educator Evgeny Yamburg discusses this in the book. Eight years after its first print run, the story remains a true living classic—and continues to attract the attention of both readers and researchers.
