"Sugar Child" is neither a memoir nor a work of fiction: despite being told from the perspective of little Eli, the author doesn't offer a "childish perspective" on the history of the 1930s and 1940s, nor does she play with readers through contrived "childhood transformations." Perhaps this is why the story, originally intended for readers aged 12–16, eventually ceased to be perceived as a "teen story," becoming part of the mainstream of Russian literature.
