The Sverrir Saga is the earliest work of the royal saga genre (also known as the king saga), but chronologically it serves as a direct continuation of the later largest collection of Scandinavian sagas, The Circle of the Earth. Snorri Sturluson ends his story at the moment where the Sverrir Saga (1177) begins, without bringing the last part to its usual conclusion - the death of the king. The presented saga reveals the history of Norway in the last quarter of the XII century - the first quarter of the XIII century, the time of strife and bloody wars between King Magnus, the son of Jarl Erling, and the impostor Sverrir, after whom the work is named.
The translation, first published in 1988, was the last work of the outstanding philologist-Scandinavist Mikhail Ivanovich Steblin-Kamensky, and not completed to the end. The manuscript was completed and supplied with the scientific apparatus by his followers and students, also well-known specialists in the field of philology and history – A.Y. Gurevich, E.A. Gurevich and O.A. Smirnitskaya.
