Nikolai Aleksandrovich Leykin was a remarkable writer and journalist whose popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was colossal. Even today, the name of the author of "Our People Abroad" is well known to fans of humor. Beginning in the early 1880s, Leykin published his own weekly magazine, "Oskolki," where he recruited the young Anton Chekhov, revealing his talent. Over his long career, Leykin wrote hundreds of short stories and essays, capturing an entire era—the everyday life of pre-revolutionary Russia. Among them are some true masterpieces. Many of the stories were dedicated to specific calendar dates—Christmas, Maslenitsa, Easter, and other holidays.

This collection presents Leykin's stories, which span the annual cycle—from Christmas to the eve of Christmastide. Their plots unfold primarily in St. Petersburg and its surrounding suburbs. Readers of this collection will not only learn about how holidays and weekdays were celebrated in the old days, what entertainment was particularly fashionable, and a host of interesting everyday details, but will also enjoy the good-natured humor with which the author depicts his characters, who invariably find themselves in amusing situations.

The collection includes original illustrations for Leikin's works from publications published during his lifetime, as well as engravings from the press of his time.
