In the Antarctic summer of 1965/66, experienced biologists and scuba divers Mikhail Propp, Evgeny Guzov and Alexander Pushkin were the first to descend under two-meter-thick fast ice near the Soviet Antarctic station Mirny. Working in extremely difficult conditions at depths of up to 50 meters, they discovered an unusually diverse underwater world there, collected a rich collection of flora and fauna samples, and discovered species previously unknown to science. It turned out that sponges, corals, sea anemones, ascidians, starfish, sea urchins and lilies live under the ice on the Antarctic shelf. The richness of the underwater world here resembled the population of tropical seas. Many of the species discovered were previously unknown to science. The results of the under-ice research conducted by M. V. Propp's group made it possible to eliminate the blank spot that existed in the overall picture of the coastal waters of Antarctica and created the basis for reconstructing the history of the formation of the fauna of this region. At the same time, they proved the availability of scientific work under the Antarctic ice. Of course, one can say that this event is incomparable with a flight into space, but it was a new and dangerous undertaking that brought a fundamentally new vision of the Southern Ocean. Similar studies were simultaneously started by American biologists in the Ross Sea at McMurdo Station. But still, Mikhail Vladimirovich Propp and his colleagues were the first researchers to discover the unique under-ice world of Antarctica to the world. Based on the results of the expedition, M. V. Propp published a book in 1968 in which he described not only the underwater inhabitants, but also the habits of penguins and seals, spoke about the difficulties of under-ice diving, about the life of polar explorers at Mirny Station. The reissue of this book, illustrated with the author's photographs, continues the "Polar Series" of the Paulsen publishing house.
