The battles of the Soviet summer offensive on Rzhev, the description of which the reader can find in the previous work of the authors "Rzhev 1942. The first summer success", as the Red Army command began planning a new operation. Its name, "Mars", it received in the development of the successful operation "Venus", which was conducted by the troops of the Kalinin front in late September 1942. The forces gathered for "Mars" allowed to hope for success. On November 25, 1942 the troops of the Kalinin and Western Fronts went on the offensive. Several weeks of heavy fighting did not subside, but none of the goals of the operation was achieved. Nevertheless, the Wehrmacht command was well aware that its troops, exhausted by the bloody battle, were unlikely to withstand another Soviet offensive. As a result, it was decided to evacuate the Rzhevskoe protrusion. The March 1943 retreat, known as the Büffel maneuver, allowed the enemy to significantly reduce the front line, but it also completely eliminated the threat to Moscow, the capital of the Soviet state. From here on, the Germans would only retreat.
