Rustam Khamdamov is an author-myth, an author-mystery. His cinema is a phantom, everything in it is too fragile to say "movie". Films are produced, films are released, films are stored in archives. Hamdamov's movie lives a different life. It is in the bizarre movement of the line: the line itself is a story - anyone who has seen Rustam Khamdamov drawing with ink will understand. The author's hand only keeps up with what should come into the light, burst into flame, dissolve.
The legend of Hamdamov - an author inaccessible to the world - was born back in the USSR, when the short film "In the Mountains of My Heart" was hidden for stylistic frills, and then - closed and washed away "Inadvertent Joys". It would seem the horrors of a totalitarian system. But then the Union collapsed, and the myth Hamdamov unexpectedly strengthened by free France - in the producer's safe settled actually and to this day inaccessible to viewers "Anna Karamazoff. A similar fate almost befell the next movie - "Vocal Parallels". But, praise the higher powers, we still have this and several other movies, filled with graceful irony, charming style, inherent in Hamdamov alone. This book is neither a portrait of him nor a solution to the mysterious pattern he weaves in collaboration with his own fate, but an attempt to capture the trace of Hamdamov's presence in the world. To tell about him and his work, part of which still remains not exactly invisible, but as if surrounded by a magic fog. The collection includes articles from different years: some of them were written for the magazine "Séance", others were commissioned especially for this edition. As in all the books in our series, the viewpoints of critics and film historians are supplemented by a digest of interviews.
