The book is devoted to the first direct Russian-Turkish conflict of 1672–1681, which opens a series of Russian-Turkish wars of the late XVII – XIX centuries. Starting as a series of local clashes aimed primarily at the struggle for influence in the Dnieper, the confrontation gradually grew into one of the largest and bloodiest military conflicts in the Eastern and Central European history of the last quarter of the XVII century. In analyzing the military and diplomatic efforts of the parties, much attention is focused on studying the goals set by Moscow and Istanbul, ideas about possible ways to achieve them, and revealing the amount of information that the Moscow government possessed about the enemy. The study is based on a large complex of Russian and partly Ottoman sources, primarily archival documents of the Ambassadorial and Order Orders.
