This paper is devoted to the fate of Gomel region - a special region, which was on the border of the largest state formations in Eastern Europe in the late Middle Ages and early Modern times - the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. From the end of the 15th century these states fought fiercely to establish their geopolitical interests in the region. As a result of the first border wars in 1486-1494 and 1500-1503, the Moscow possessions approached the territory of the modern Republic of Belarus. The only region that was under the control of the Moscow authorities (1500-1537) was the Gomel region. The work is historiographical, research and historical-geographical in nature. Along with considering the history of the borderland, the author solved the problems of localization of settlements in the region, reconstruction of state and administrative boundaries. The research is based on special historical methods (first of all, retrospective) and a wide source base, including Moscow-Lithuanian treaties, ambassadorial books, acts of the Lithuanian metric, registers of borders, and descriptions of volosts.
The book is intended for specialist historians, local historians, students of history and all those interested in the history of Russia and Belarus.
