The publication's structure is based on a new concept: the illustrations are arranged according to the colors fundamental to national symbolism and dominant in the color palette of the Russian sarafan. Separate sections provide information on the key stages of manufacturing the homespun fabric from which sarafans were made, traditional bleaching methods, and other fabric decoration techniques. The appendix includes cutting diagrams of authentic museum specimens. Most of the published materials are housed in the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve. The publication also features exhibits from the collections of leading Russian museums. Most of the sarafans are being published for the first time. The book is intended for a wide audience, including lovers and connoisseurs of folk art.
