In the winter of 1927–28, two young American art historians, Alfred Barr and Jerry Abbott, visited the Soviet Union. Soon after returning from their trip, Barr became the director of the newly formed Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Abbott became his deputy. While traveling around the USSR, they kept diaries in which they captured the cultural situation on the eve of the beginning of forced socialist construction and the end of the era of the Russian avant-garde. Barr and Abbott recorded their impressions of new theater and cinema repertoires, their inspection of museum collections nationalized by the new government, and their meetings with major figures in Soviet culture: Sergei Eisenstein and Vsevolod Meyerhold, Moisei Ginzburg and Sergei Tretyakov, Alexander Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova.
