In the 17th century, an unprecedented Russian colonization of Eastern Siberia, including Transbaikalia and the Amur Region (Dauria), took place. In just fifty years, a huge territory was developed, several times larger than Russia itself, and the Russians reached the Chinese border. The war that began for the disputed lands ended with the signing of an "eternal peace" between Russia and China, many provisions of which are still in effect today.

In the book by P. T. Yakovleva, written under the editorship of Academician L. G. Beskrovny, all these events are shown in detail, based on many archival documents, including the signing of the first Russian-Chinese treaty. Assessing it, the authors write: "Russia, fighting for access to the Black and Baltic Seas, was very interested in maintaining peace and developing trade relations with neighboring China."
