The simple-looking wooden spoon—a ubiquitous household item—played an important role in folk rituals and spiritual culture.
This book presents over 240 items from the collection of the Russian Ethnographic Museum with detailed descriptions, based on which it proposes a classification of spoons by purpose: from culinary and tableware to pilgrimage and souvenir spoons. This is the first publication.
This publication traces the spoon's journey from its humble beginnings to the finished product, presents its manufacturing technology, provides an overview of the main centers of spoon production in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and describes local forms, types, and decorative techniques. It also explores the spoon's place in meals, family rituals, and Orthodox traditions.
The book concludes with an appendix featuring a master class on Pizhemskaya spoon painting by folk artist Olga Nikolaevna Shelepeeva.
