The book tells how the industrial revolution and social chaos gave birth to an armed anarchist movement in the early 20th century. The traditions of Russian anarchists were a mixture of Western and homegrown elements. Filtered through the teachings of Bakunin, Kropotkin and naive populism, they developed rapidly during the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. Anarchism in Russia became more active and declined along with the development of the revolutionary movement as a whole.

In the maelstrom of uprisings, terrorist acts and the Civil War, the anarchists tried to implement their program, but suffered defeat, ousted from the political arena by the Bolsheviks.
