Igor Nikolaevich Sukhikh is a literary scholar, Doctor of Philology, professor at St. Petersburg University, writer, and critic. He is the author of numerous studies on the history of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the books “Problems of Chekhov’s Poetics,” “Chekhov in Life: Plots for a Short Novel,” “From… to… Studies in Russian Literature,” “Sergei Dovlatov: Time, Place, Destiny,” “Structure and Meaning: Literary Theory for Everyone,” “Books of the 20th Century. Russian Canon,” and others, as well as literature textbooks beloved by schoolchildren and teachers. The two-volume “Russian Literature for Everyone” (first published in 2013, in three volumes) is a guide to Russian classics, addressed to the widest possible readership. It provides an overview of the national literary canon, from “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” to authors of the late 20th century. This edition is supplemented with new chapters - "Folklore: from bylina to ditty", "Tales of the Time of Troubles: happiness-ill-fortune", "A.D. Kantemir", "A.N. Radishchev", "N.S. Leskov", the chapters on Saltykov-Shchedrin and Gorky have been expanded, and a large section "The Language of Russian Writers" has been included. "Russian Literature for Everyone" is one of those rare books that do not become outdated over time. It once again proves that philology is not a dull science and a serious conversation about literature can be not only educational, but also fascinating.
