When did the birch become a national symbol of Russia? What events, institutions, and ideas influenced this? How has the image of the birch changed throughout history? Igor and Natalia Narsky's book consists of fifteen essays: in each, the authors examine a specific story related to the cultural history of Russia's main tree—from ancient peasant songs and the poeticization of the birch in the 19th century to dance ensembles and hard currency stores in the USSR. Drawing on scholarly, popular science, journalistic, folklore, and poetic texts, published and unpublished documents, songs, paintings, and films, the researchers advance a bold hypothesis: the consistent "nationalization" of the birch began quite recently—only in the second half of the 20th century. Igor Narsky is a Doctor of Historical Sciences and a professor at Perm State University. Natalia Narskaya is a PhD in Sociology and an associate professor.
