The main theme of Konstantin Zvonarev's book is the organization of Russian intelligence and its methods. The book covers virtually the entire reign of Nicholas II, from the period preceding the Russo-Japanese War to the October Revolution. It covers not only the agents directly subordinate to the General Staff, but also the agents of military districts (fronts during World War I), armies, and even individual units. For example, in 1916, the headquarters of one army was engaged in creating its own intelligence network in… Argentina. Significant attention is devoted to the activities of official military agents (military attachés) in various countries. The author draws extensively on materials from the General Staff archives, as well as testimonies of leaders and participants in covert operations. The first edition of the book was published in 1929, classified "For Official Purposes."
Konstantin Zvonarev (real name Karl Zvaigzne) is a historian and head of the Intelligence Department at the Frunze Military Academy. In 1938 he was accused of counter-revolutionary activity and executed; in 1956 he was rehabilitated.
