How did Russian national cuisine emerge? And what can studying medieval culinary traditions tell us about the origins of Russian society? A new book by renowned culinary historian Olga Syutkina dispels the myth that this topic is underrepresented in historical sources before the 16th century. The author reconstructs the gastronomic landscape of pre-Petrine Rus', linking it to economic, social, and cultural processes. The study shows how natural resources, political practices, and foreign influences shaped the evolution of nutrition, providing a vivid picture of the medieval diet. The work is based on a large body of sources and includes rare illustrations.

Olga Syutkina is a writer, historian, and television presenter. She is the co-author of several books on the history of Russian cuisine, published in Russia and abroad, including "Russian Cuisine from Myth to Science," published by NLO. She is a recipient of the Gourmand Cook Book award and the Russian Food Show Awards (2018) "For Contribution to the Development of Russian Cuisine."
