Volume 1. "The Difficult Path to the Great Reforms"
The word "crisis" has recently appeared in the lexicon of Russian economists in relation to the characterization of the domestic economic situation in the country. Previously, Soviet scientists generally attributed the concept of crisis to the characteristic features of the capitalist mode of production, but not the socialist one, and even preferred to talk about the financial and economic crises in Tsarist Russia in general terms, without going into specific details. In this part of the study, the author examines in some detail the crisis phenomena in the economy and finances of the Russian Empire from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the Great Reforms carried out by Alexander II after the Crimean War - a heroic and tragic stage in the history of Russia, which showed how much the country's financial and economic system needed to be restructured and reformatted. Certain advantages of the work include a large number of archival materials, including foreign ones, from the funds of Western European central banks, previously practically inaccessible to Russian researchers. Most of these documents are published for the first time and are not in scientific circulation even in the countries where they are stored in the original language. The work also pays significant attention to issues of international credit and financial markets and the impact of crisis situations in the world economy on the state of affairs in Russia.
The book is written in a fairly lively language, contains a lot of factual material about the life and work of Russian statesmen and military leaders, major industrialists, bankers, scientists, world-famous writers and may be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in the history of the domestic economy, finance and banking.

Volume 2. "From the Peasant Reform to the Gold Standard"
The great reforms of Alexander II, primarily the peasant reform, have been a subject of long-standing interest for researchers. However, in most cases, the emphasis was placed on the political component of the liberation of peasants from serfdom. Extremely little attention was paid to the changes that followed in the economic life of the country, and the financial component was almost completely ignored. The author fills this gap by analyzing in detail this aspect of the peasant reform, which entailed the full-fledged entry of millions of new workers into the labor market. The peasant reform lasted for decades, which required radical changes in many areas, primarily in the monetary and credit sphere. The author examines in detail the emergence of a new important institution of anti-crisis management - the State Bank, the prototype of the central bank. Readers have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with such an extraordinary event as the country's transition to the gold standard. The work convincingly proves that neither a hard national currency nor significant gold and foreign exchange reserves are a panacea for economic crises. Ultimately, it was the excessively rigid system of the gold standard that largely caused the collapse of the economic basis of monarchical rule and the beginning of a socialist experiment in the country, which lasted seven decades. Readers will once again be able to get acquainted with a number of historical documents that were not previously in scientific circulation. The book contains a lot of other educational information, not always directly related to the topic of the study, but making the reading process more exciting.
