The Great Northern War of 1700-1721 was a turning point in the history of Russia and many other countries of Northern and Eastern Europe. For Russia, the result of its participation in the coalition of European countries against Sweden was the return of previously lost lands, securing access to the Baltic Sea and becoming a great power.
This volume tells about the first stage of the Great Northern War. It traces the events from the defeat of the Russian army at Narva on November 19 (30), 1700 to the crushing defeat of the Swedes at Poltava on June 27 (July 8), 1709. In the domestic literature the description of these crucial events was given mainly with reliance on Russian sources. The new monograph by Dr. A.V. Bespalov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, presents a holistic picture of the military and diplomatic confrontation during the Northern War.
