Dmitry Markov on the new book:
"Almost five years have passed since the release of my first photo album #Chernovik. During this time a lot of new photos have been collected; having selected the best ones and using the successful exhibition at the Gogol Center as a basis, we have prepared a new album together with Treemedia publishing house: "Russia in Square". Why publish photographs that have already been published and are freely available online? I see two reasons. First, the events of this year suggest that the aforementioned "free access" is a fragile phenomenon, dependent on political agendas. Of course, the likelihood of Instagram being blocked is small, but we can't completely rule out such a scenario. In this regard, I'd like to preserve many years of photo archive in a reliable, analog format. Secondly, I would like these photos to remain with those who see in them a part of their life. Because this is a part of our history. It is our childhood in the bedroom suburbs, our neighbors on the benches at the entrances, familiar streets of our cities and, of course, ourselves. As a photographer, I am flattered to be recognized abroad, but, hand on heart, my dearest and favorite viewers are those who recognize something native in these pictures. Those who, like me, feel a connection, remember the past or guess the present. They are my most important viewers. And it is for them that this album is made.
