Marquis Astolphe de Custine's book "Russia in 1839" belongs among those works about which even those who have never read them have heard something. Since the book was published in Paris in May 1843, it has been accompanied by scandalous fame. Banned by the Russian censorship soon after its release, Custine's book was never fully translated into Russian until 1996. Meanwhile, the French Marquis guessed many unchanging features of Russian life. Sometimes his remarks are offensive, sometimes, on the contrary, flattering. The conclusion made by one of Custine's first Russian readers, Moscow post-director A.Y. Bulgakov, says it most accurately: "And hell knows what his true conclusion is, that we are the first nation in the world, or we are the most vile!". Modern readers have the opportunity to see for themselves that Custine is an intelligent and perceptive, albeit biased observer, and most importantly - a great stylist, a master of polished aphorism. In this edition, the complete 1996 translation is printed with some corrections; the commentary has been substantially revised and supplemented.
