The history of the 20th century in Russia is marked by a series of upheavals that tested the country and its heritage time after time. Many religious monuments - temples, monasteries, chapels - were purposefully destroyed by the Soviet authorities, falling into disrepair and ruin. Rapid development and urbanization, in turn, did not contribute to the preservation of historical buildings of Russian cities. Many notable buildings perished during the Second World War.
Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky made us a huge gift, capturing in color all that we today are accustomed to call "passing nature": wooden architecture, monastic architecture, noble estates, peasant settlements and everyday life. Russia on the threshold of the XX century in his pictures seems to be frozen in anticipation of the coming upheavals. Neither the newsreel, which spread at the same time, nor picturesque works - eloquent witnesses of the epoch, but still unreliable to a certain extent - preserved it in such a way. Prokudin-Gorsky's discoveries in the field of color photography made it possible to create a unique material, which now serves as a support in various fields of knowledge and is of interest not only to lovers of antiquity. This book offers to get acquainted with it. The album is accompanied by a text by Tatiana Sokhareva.
