The book deals with topical and controversial in historiography problems of the history of the peasantry and agriculture of Russia in the second half of the XIX – first half of the XX century, when the most important content of its historical development was industrial modernization. It is shown that it was carried out by the authorities both in the pre-revolutionary and in the Soviet periods, largely at the expense of the resources of the village. At the same time, peasants acted as an active subject in the process of industrial modernization, as evidenced by the peasant revolution as part of the Great Russian Revolution. The book substantiates the thesis about the possibility of another variant of the development of agriculture of the USSR, different from Stalin's civilization.

The book is intended not only for specialists, but also for a wide range of readers interested in the agrarian history of Russia.
