The collection, collectively titled "Motherland," by renowned Russian photographer Sergei Maksimishin consists of two volumes.
The first volume includes works by unknown photographers from the author's collection of "folk" photography: images from family albums, wall newspapers, departmental reports, and memorabilia albums. The photographs are divided into chronological chapters: from the Revolution to Perestroika.
The second volume of the duology consists of photographs taken by Sergei in Russia from 1996 to 2022. Some of them were taken during editorial assignments for publications such as Izvestia, Ogonyok, Russkiy Reporter, GEO, Stern, and others; others are the photographer's own projects.
If the first volume is a journey through time, the second is a journey through space. Leafing through the book, the viewer moves from east to west. In compiling the photographs into one volume, Sergei Maksimishin did not set himself the ambitious goal of creating a portrait of the country, well aware of the enormity of the task. This is nothing more than a selection: the book includes those photographs taken in Russia over 25 years of work that seem most interesting to their author.
