The work of Robert Falk (1886–1958) has been of constant interest to art historians, artists, and collectors for over half a century. At various times, he was called an avant-gardist and a formalist, a socialist realist, and a forerunner of the “severe style.” Meanwhile, he himself called his style “picturesque realism,” choosing a special language that allowed him to perceive and convey the symphony of the world through the art of painting. The book by St. Petersburg art historian Anton Uspensky attempts to comprehend and analyze the painting system of an artist who possessed an individual sense of color, special vision, and an innate sensitivity to rhythm. Throughout his long creative life, Falk consistently and stubbornly, with incredible efficiency, moved toward the landmark that he called “picturesque painting.” Devoted to his ideals and moral principles, he always defended “the right to one’s own song” and “in the historical perspective remained alone, not joining anyone and not expressing anyone’s group interests” (D.V. Sarabyanov).
