This edition publishes the first complete translation from Greek into Russian of books LI-LXIII of Cassius Dion's (163/164 - after 230 AD) Roman History, which covers the events from Octavian's assertion of power after his victory at Cape Actium over Mark Antony and Cleopatra (31 BC) to the outbreak of civil war after the death of Nero, the last ruler of the Julian-Claudian dynasty, including the short reign of Emperor Othon (69 AD). This part of Dion's work is the most important historical source, which gives a holistic view of the reign of the first princeps and his successors (Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero), significantly supplementing the evidence of other Greek and Roman historians. The translation is accompanied by detailed scholarly commentary based on modern research on the early principate.
